The fund, which was launched last year before Wattpad was acquired by South Korea’s Naver, finances early development for promising titles from digital book publisher Wattpad and web comic publisher WEBTOON.

WEBTOON horror comic GremoryLand, created by A. Rasen, will be developed for film, with L.A. based prodco Vertigo Entertainment attached to co-develop. Wattpad titles Unholy Matrimony, written by user @xxinlove, and I’m a Gay Wizard, written by V.S. Santoni, will be developed for TV.

GremoryLand, which has more than 20 million reads on WEBTOON and follows a group of friends at a deadly theme park, has Australian novelist Gabriel Bergmoser attached to pen the screenplay. Unholy Matrimony is about an arranged marriage between vineyard dynasty heirs, with 39.6 million reads on Wattpad, and will be adapted for TV by screenwriter Alyson Weaver Nicholas. I’m a Gay Wizard, which follows a gay teen and his trans best friend who are unexpectedly sent to a magical institute after casting a spell and has 678,000 reads on Wattpad, has Legacies writer Price Peterson attached to adapt.

All three titles will be produced by Wattpad WEBTOON Studios’ Aron Levitz, Eric Lehrman, Lindsey Weems Ramey and Taylor Grant.

Wattpad WEBTOON Studios was formed in June following the US$600 million Naver acquisition, with Levitz leading as president. The development fund was launched in November 2020.
