Tubi says its latest original, Sidelined: The QB and Me, is the streamer’s No. 1 movie in Canada following its release on Nov. 29.
The romantic drama accounted for 17.9% of total Tubi viewers in the U.S. and 19.9% of total viewers in Canada during its first week on the Fox-owned platform. It has brought the most new viewers to the service for a title to date, according to a news release from Tubi.
The film is still the top ranked release in Canada on the platform as of Dec. 9, a Tubi spokesperson told Playback Daily.
Sidelined: The QB and Me is based on Tay Marley’s Wattpad novel The QB Bad Boy and Me. The film, is written by Crystal Ferreiro and Mary Gulino and marks Toronto-based director Justin Wu’s (Reginald the Vampire) debut feature. The film was commissioned by Tubi from Vancouver-based Thunderbird Entertainment’s Great Pacific Media (GPM) and produced by Adam Wescott and Mckenna Marshall along with Wattpad Webtoon Studios’ Aron Levitz and Lindsey Ramey. Wattpad Webtoon Studios’ David Madden along with GPM’s Lindsay Macadam, David Way and Tony Chung are executive producers.
The data from Tubi is backed up by Variety‘s weekly streaming charts, based on data from Luminate, which said the film accrued more than 170 million minutes of watch time in the U.S. during the week of Nov. 29 to Dec. 5.
The film stars Siena Agudong (No Good Nick) as a dancer and TikTok personality Noah Beck as a football star who begin a high school romance despite having disparate post-grad aspirations.
Also starring is James Van Der Beek (Dawson’s Creek), Victoria-born Drew Ray Tanner (Riverdale) and Toronto-based singer, songwriter and actor Deborah Cox (Sounds Black).
According to Tubi, Sidelined: The QB and Me has sparked interest on TikTok. A spokesperson said the top 20 user generated videos clipping and discussing the film received more than 153 million views.
