The doctor is in, again: NBC picks up more Transplant

Acquired by NBC this May, the popular Canadian original series' second season has also been picked for the network.

Following its decision to pick up Transplant this May, NBC has announced that the hit medical drama starring Hamza Haq (Quantico) will return to the U.S. network for a second season.

Produced by Sphère Média in association with CTV and Universal Studio Group division NBCUniversal International Studios, previously, it was confirmed that the show created by Joseph Kay would return for a sophomore season during Bell Media’s virtual “Homefront.” Of note, NBC’s renewal follows Transplant‘s freshman season finale on the U.S. network last week.

Executive produced by Kay, Jocelyn Deschenes, Bruno Dubé, outgoing Bell Media president Randy Lennox, Virginia Rankin, Jeremy Spry and Tara Woodbury, the series developed at CTV follows a Syrian doctor who tries to build a new life for himself and his sister in Canada.

The most-watched Canadian original series, according to CTV, Transplant officially made its debuted on NBC this September.

On NBC, the show averaged a 0.7 rating in adults 18 to 49 and 5.7 million viewers overall in the live plus seven days, according to a release from NBC announcing the move. As well, NBC also said the series scored as one of television’s most time-shifted shows through its run, with each of its first seven original telecasts ranking as the No. 1 drama of the week in live plus three day. Additionally, in linear and digital viewing to date, Transplant has averaged 7.7 million total viewers.

Alongside Haq, Transplant stars Laurence Leboeuf (The Disappearance), John Hannah (Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.), Jim Watson (Mary Kills People) and Ayisha Issa (Polar). NBCUniversal Global Distribution handles worldwide distribution for the series.

Following Transplant‘s acquisition, last month, NBC picked up fellow Canadian medical drama Nurses. Produced by ICF Films, Entertainment One (eOne) in association with Corus Entertainment, the series made its debut last week and is set to air again today (Dec. 14) at 10 p.m., before shifting to Tuesday nights at 10 p.m.
