Netflix cancels Warrior Nun after two seasons

Creator Simon Barry addressed the cancellation on Twitter, stating that producers are seeking the possibility of a second home for the series.

Netflix has cancelled sci-fi series Warrior Nun following the debut of its second season.

The series was created by Canadian scribe and producer Simon Barry, based on the Warrior Nun Areala comic book character from Ben Dunn.

“I’ve just found out that @netflix will not be renewing #WarriorNun,” wrote Barry in a tweet on Tuesday (Dec. 13). “My sincere appreciation to all the fans who worked so hard to bring awareness to this series, and for the love you showed me, the cast and the whole production team. It was a privilege to be a part of this.”

Warrior Nun is produced by Vancouver prodco Reality Distortion Field (RDF), co-founded by Barry and Stephen Hegyes, who are both executive producers on the series. Barry also served as showrunner and a director on a number of episodes. Both seasons of the show were filmed in Spain.

The series stars Alba Baptista as a young woman who is magically resurrected by a mysterious religious artifact, unwittingly becoming the latest in a long line of women known as the Warrior Nun.

Barry later stated on Twitter that RDF is currently looking into opportunities to bring a third season of Warrior Nun “somewhere else.” The hashtag #SaveWarriorNun was in the top 10 trending topics in Canada as of press time.

Warrior Nun first premiered on Netflix in July 2020, and was renewed for a second season the following month. Season two premiered on Nov. 10. The series has ranked among Parrot Analytics’ top 10 digital original series in Canada since its debut.
