Hot Sheet: You remains top in demand for digital originals

HBO’s The Last of Us maintained top overall TV show demand for the third straight week.

Netflix’s You remained as the No. 1 digital original in early May following the psychological thriller’s fifth and final season release on April 24.

The series, which follows its dangerously charming and deadly protagonist who is willing to do anything to intrude on the lives of those he is obsessed with, was 45.3 times more in demand than the average TV show in Canada during the week of May 5 to 11, according to Parrot Analytics. That represents a significant slide from the previous week when You recorded a demand average of 61.4. It is, however, an increase from its demand average of 27.9 the week of its season five release on April 24.

The No. 2 and No. 3 most in-demand digital originals swapped places from the week prior as Disney+’s Andor landed in the runner-up spot with Prime Video’s Hazbin Hotel following behind. The Star Wars spy thriller, which premiered its second and final season on April 22, had a demand average of 42.6 while the adult animated comedy had one of 34.5.

Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale, available in Canada through Crave, Prime Video and illico+, and Netflix’s Black Mirror rounded out the top five digital originals with demand averages of 31.7 and 31.2, respectively. The sixth and final season of the series based on Margaret Atwood’s 1985 novel released April 8 while Black Mirror‘s season seven released April 10.

On the overall TV show chart, HBO’s The Last of Us, available through Crave in Canada, remained No. 1 for a third straight week with a demand average of 59.6. The post-apocalyptic series based on the video game series of the same name was followed by NBC’s Saturday Night Live, available in Canada on Global, with a demand average of 59.2. The May 10 episode of the sketch comedy program was hosted by Walton Goggins with Montreal’s Arcade Fire as the musical guest.

Parrot Analytics calculates its Top 10 lists using Demand Expressions, which are shown by using a metric that demonstrates how much more in-demand the top series are than the average TV show (linear, pay TV, SVOD and AVOD) in Canada. For example, a difference of 1x represents the market average and 10x means a series is 10 times more in demand than the average TV show in this market. Demand is defined as the total audience demand being expressed for a title within a market. Audience demand reflects the desire, engagement and viewership, weighted by importance; thus, a stream or download is a higher expression of demand than a “like” or comment.
