Netflix has picked up the worldwide distribution rights to Canadian director Richie Mehta’s police thriller Delhi Crime.

The seven-episode series, which had its world premiere at Sundance Film Festival Jan. 29, is inspired by the 2012 investigation into the rape of a young woman in India that captured the attention of the world. Mehta, who wrote and directed the project, spent six years researching the emotionally fraught case, and shot the series on-location in New Delhi. It was first announced during Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s state visit to India in 2018.

Delhi Crime is produced by Mumbai’s Golden Karaven and L.A.-based Ivanhoe Pictures. Ivanhoe Pictures’ Robert Friedland, Sidney Kimmel and Brian Kornreich are producers on the series. Golden Karavan’s Aaron Kaplan, Jeff Sagansky, Florence Sloan, Apoorva Bakshi, Pooja Kohli and Sanjay Bachani serve as executive producers alongside John Penotti, Killian Kerwin and Michael Hogan from Ivanhoe. Kornreich and Robert Jesuele negotiated the deal on behalf of Ivanhoe and Golden Karavan, respectively.

Shefali Shah (Monsoon Wedding) stars in the series, along with Adil Hussain (Life of Pi), Denzil Smith (The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel), Rasika Dugal (Qissa), Rajesh Tailang (Siddarth) and Yashaswini Dayama (Dear Zindagi).
