CBC’s police procedural Allegiance led the nominees for the 29th Writers Guild of Canada (WGC) Screenwriting Awards.
The WGC Screenwriting Awards will take place at Toronto’s Koerner Hall on April 28. Andrew Phung (Kim’s Convenience) and Jonathan Langdon (Run the Burbs) will co-host the awards, written by Anthony Q. Farrell (Overlord and the Underwoods). The winners for the Showrunner Award, the Jim Burt Screenwriting Prize and the Sondra Kelly Award will be announced at the ceremony. The Sondra Kelly Award provides a mid-career female-identifying screenwriter with $5,000 to research and develop a self-initiated project.
Allegiance‘s (Lark Productions, pictured) dominated in the Drama Series category with four nominations. The nominated writers are Mark Ellis and Stephanie Morgenstern for the episode “8×6,” Penny Gummerson for “The Legacy,” Anar Ali for “Pilot” and Ali and Sarah Dodd for “Safe Harbours.”
Other nominees in the category include Christina Ray for CBC’s Murdoch Mysteries (Shaftesbury) and Michael Konyves for CBC and the CW series Wild Cards (Blink49 Studios, Front Street Pictures).
Jasmeet Raina’s Crave comedy Late Bloomer (Pier 21 Films) led with three nominations in the Comedy Series category: Lakna Edirisinghe for “Heat Check,” Jagjiwan Sohal for “The Turban” and Shebli Zarghami for “Turn Down for What.”
Other comedy nominees are Andrew De Angelis for CTV’s Children Ruin Everything (New Metric Media), Eva Thomas for Crave and APTN’s Don’t Even (Pier 21 Films, Frantic Films, Sekowan Media) and Tricia Fish for CBC’s Sort Of (Sphere Media).
In the Children’s category, the 2D-animated series Open Season: Call of Nature (9 Story Media Group) led with three nominations. Nominated writers are Mike Girard for “Cash Camp, Pt. 1 & 2,” Joel Buxton for “Squirrel Down” and Tom Berger for “What a Chinook.”
The other Children’s nominees are Carly DeNure for Apple TV+’s Camp Snoopy (WildBrain Studios, Peanuts), Madeleine Patton for Nickelodeon and Nelvana’s Hamsters of Hamsterdale (Atomic Cartoons) and Dan Dillabough for Prime Video’s Zokie of Planet Ruby (Nelvana).
The nominees for the Feature Film category are Andrew Currie and Colin Aussant for Currie’s The Invisibles (Quadrant Motion Pictures, Resolute Films); Joris Jarsky, Adam MacDonald and Enuka Okuma for MacDonald’s Out Come the Wolves (High Park Entertainment, December Films); Jason Buxton for his film Sharp Corner (Alcina Pictures, Shut Up & Colour Pictures, Kobalt Films, Workhorse Pictures); and Pat Mills, Zoe Whittall and Noel Baker for Karen Knox’s We Forgot to Break Up (Motel Pictures).
The nominees for the Documentary category are Heath Affolter, Nathan Affolter, Thomas Affolter and Jon Affolter for the Affolter brothers’ film Altona (Foreshadow Films, Langer Films); Thomas Conway and Michael Sykora for the Bell Fibe TV1 series Botanical Jungle (Enter the Picture Productions); and Lisa Jackson for her film Wilfred Buck (Door Number 3 Productions, NFB).
The MOW and Miniseries nominees are Keri Ferencz for Hallmark’s Gilded Newport Mysteries: Murder at the Breakers (Front Street Pictures); Matt Wells, Ian Carpenter and Aaron Martin for Tubi’s Guess Who (Incendo); and Michelle Ricci for Hallmark’s Legend of the Lost Locket (Hunt Films, Mystique Films).
The nominees in the Short Films category are Simon Racioppa for Jim Henson’s The Storyteller – The Seven Ravens (Felix & Paul Studios); Joel Buxton for Buxton and Charles M. Smith’s Let Me In; and Emily Hurson and Andrew Moodie for Moodie’s Memento Mori (Tailored Films).
The nominees in the Short Series category are Nisha Khan, Rabiya Mansoor and Marushka Almeida for CBC Gems’ Get Up, Aisha (iThentic); Duana Taha for CBC’s Near or Far (Harlow Creative); Rosa Laborde for Crave’s Nesting (Project Undertow); Brendan Halloran for Space Janitors (Space Mop); and Perrie Voss and Scott Farley for J Stevens’ Stories from my Gay Grandparents (Play Media).
CBC’s Let’s Go, Bananas! (9 Story Media Group) and Knowledge Network’s Luna, Chip & Inkie Adventure Rangers Go (Knowledge Network, Groupe Media TFO) each received two nominations in the Preschool category.
The nominees for Let’s Go, Bananas! are Brandon Hackett for “Yelloween” and Aaron Eves for “Papa the Daddy.” The nominees for Luna, Chip & Inkie Adventure Rangers Go are Shelley Hoffman and Robert Pincombe for “Lights, Camera, Save Eagle Creek!” and Tony Tran for “Who’s Your Mama?”
The other Preschool nominees are Emer Connon for CBC’s Dylan’s Playtime Adventures (9 Story Media Group), Celeste Koon for CBC’s Go Togo (Gazelle Automations) and Gillian Pike for Spin Master’s Vida the Vet (Spin Master Entertainment).
YTV’s Popularity Papers (Aircraft Pictures, Wexworks Media) led with three nominations in the Teens & Tweens category. The series’ nominees are JP Larocque and Vivian Lin for “Let’s Sick Together,” Lin and Kyah Green for “Odds Squads” and Lin for “The Wonderful Wizard of Mapleview Part 2.”
Other nominees in the category are Evany Rosen for Prime Video and Hulu’s Davey & Jonesie’s Locker (marblemedia) and Nicole Stamp for Telus and Global Citizen’s Media Stamped (Sinking Ship Entertainment).
