Get Up, Aisha wins top prize at T.O. Webfest

The CBC Gem series won the grand prize at the two-day short-form festival in Toronto.

CBC Gem series Get Up, Aisha took home the grand prize at the 11th annual T.O. Webfest.

The short-form series festival ran from Sept. 17 and 18 in Toronto at Novotel Toronto Centre, and announced the winners of its short-form and podcast competition on Sept. 19.

Get Up, Aisha (iThentic) picked up three awards total, winning the Best Series Grand Prize; Best Writing, for Marushka Jessica Almeida, Rabiya Mansoor and Nisha Khan; and Best Actor in a Canadian Series, for Sana Asad.

Best English Canadian Series went to Gem’s Near or Far (Harlow Creative). The series won two other awards, Best Editing for Christopher Minns and the Ben Houtman Memorial Award for Best Cinematography for Jack Yen Chen.

Ici Tou.tv series Les météorites (Inaru Films) won Best Drama, as well as Best Directing for Nadia Louis-Desmarchais and Best Costume Design for Zoe Roux.

Season four of the webseries Space Janitors (Timshel Pictures) won Best Sci-Fi/Horror/Fantasy, Best Production Design for Sebastian Harder and Best Visual Effects for Davin Lengyel.

The Best French Canadian Series was awarded to UnisTV’s La Terre appelle Mathilde (Romeo & Fils).

Hollywood Suite series Poly is the New Monogamy (Dreamweaver Pictures) was awarded Best Toronto Series, while the Best of BC Series was given to Yolanda the Goddess (Orange Rose Productions).

Season two of OUTtv’s Dating Unlocked (Border2Border) was awarded Best LGBTQ+ Series. Another Border2Border production, OUTtv original Drag Heals, won Best Lifestyle/Variety.

Additional winners include the webseries Stories from my Gay Grandparents (Play Media), which won Best Comedy and Best Ensemble in a Canadian Series; VRDLK: Family of Vurdulak (Lakeside Animation, Metrafilms) with Best Animated/Children’s Series; season two of TFO’s Hogtown (Diversified Voices Productions) with Best Youth Series; and season three of CBC Gem’s Farm Crime (Big Cedar Films) won Best Documentary.

The Triple Threat Auteur distinction was given to Vivek Shraya of Gem’s How to Fail As a Popstar (Sphere Media), which also won Best Hair and Makeup, given to Fatema Hoque.
