Netflix sets first-look deal with Attraction

The agreement will see Attraction develop and produce original French-language films for Netflix.

Netflix is expanding its original film offerings in the Quebec market.

The streamer announced Wednesday (Nov. 15) that it has inked a first-look deal with Montreal-based prodco Attraction to develop and produce French-language films.

The deal is “a first in the Canadian market,” according to Attraction president Richard Speer (pictured), in a statement, adding that it “demonstrates Netflix’s commitment to promoting our local Francophone talent to audiences around the world.”

Netflix previously commissioned Patrice Laliberté’s Jusqu’au déclin (The Decline) in 2018, and licensed Ricardo Trogi’s Le Guide de la famille parfaite (The Guide to the Perfect Family) in 2021. It also acquired another 25 Quebec films that same year.

Attraction’s drama series Au secours de Béatrice (Saving Bea), which originally aired on TVA, was also recently picked up by Netflix. The first four seasons are set to debut on the platform on Jan. 15, 2024.

“We are big fans of Attraction’s creative vision and have been impressed by their work with so many talented Québecois filmmakers,” said Netflix’s Danielle Woodrow, director of content, Canada. “We look forward to collaborating with this talented team to tell stories that will delight audiences for years to come.”
