Prime Video joins with Left Bank for scripted drama

Cameras are rolling on Amazon Prime Video and Left Bank Pictures' Three Pines, starring Alfred Molina and directed by Sam Donovan, Tracey Deer and Daniel Grou.

Cameras are rolling on Amazon Prime Video’s Three Pines. The series adaptation of Canadian author Louise Penny’s bestselling crime novel series is being produced by U.K. prodco Left Bank Pictures (The Crown).

The eight-episode, one-hour drama series follows chief inspector Armand Gamache of the Sûreté du Québec, a man who sees things that others do not: the light between the cracks, the mythic in the mundane, and the evil in the seemingly ordinary. As he investigates a spate of murders in Three Pines, a seemingly idyllic village, he discovers long-buried secrets and faces a few of his own ghosts.

Filming in Montreal and rural Quebec until December, the series stars Alfred Molina as Chief Inspector Armand Gamache. Additional Canadian cast members include Rossif Sutherland, Elle-Máijá Tailfeathers, Tantoo Cardinal, Clare Coulter and Sarah Booth.

The series will launch exclusively on Prime Video in Canada, U.S., UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, and Greenland. Sony Pictures Television will handle all other international sales.

“With Three Pines we continue to grow our slate of local originals, and overall investment in Canada,” said Christina Wayne, head of Canadian Originals at Amazon Studios in a release announcing the start of production. “The series will be our first locally produced scripted drama, and we are thrilled to work with Left Bank to bring these layered characters, unique setting, and masterfully constructed mysteries that Louise created to Prime Video. Alfred Molina perfectly embodies the cerebral and compassionate nature of Gamache, and leads a tremendous cast.”

The series is the first to be shot in Canada for Left Bank Pictures. Muse Entertainment is providing production services.

Three Pines is executive produced by Andy Harries, Sharon Hughff, and John Phillips for Left Bank Pictures, with Sam Donovan, Emilia di Girolamo, and Alfred Molina also serving as executive producers. The series is written by Emilia di Girolamo, who adapted the novels as lead writer, with Catherine Tregenna penning two additional episodes. Directors on the series are Sam Donovan, serving as lead director, Mohawk director Tracey Deer, and Daniel Grou. John Griffin will produce the series. Tracey Deer also serves as Indigenous consultant, alongside Katsitsionni Melissa Fox. IllumiNative will also consult on the series.

Three Pines is the latest Prime Video original to be shot in Canada, following the revival of The Kids in the Hall (Project10, Broadway Video), sports docuseries All or Nothing: Toronto Maple Leafs (Cream Productions), comedy-variety series LOL: Last One Laughing Canada (Insight Productions), scripted comedy The Lake (AMAZE) and special Rupi Kaur Live.
