Amazon names Rupi Kaur Live special as fifth Canadian original

The one-hour special marries the Indian-Canadian poet's spoken word art with an array of visuals and will debut on Prime Video later this month.

A mazon Prime Video has acquired a one-hour special from Indian-Canadian poet and performer Rupi Kaur.

The special, which Amazon says is its fifth Canadian original for Prime Video, is titled Rupi Kaur Live and will mix Kaur’s poetry, music and spoken work art with an array of compelling visuals about growth and healing. It will stream in Canada and the U.S. on Aug. 27.

Rupi Kaur Live is directed by Liz Patrick and produced by Kansas City’s Andrews McMeel Universal (AMU) in association with L.A.-based Hyde Park Entertainment.

Kaur is an internationally acclaimed artist and poet, with her self-published book of poetry milk and honey released in 2014 when she was only 21. It spent more than 100 weeks on the New York Times bestseller list and has been translated into more than 35 languages. Her poetry first gained notoriety on Instagram, where she currently has 4.3 million followers.

Executive producers for the special are Kaur, Rakhi Mutta (who is also Kaur’s manager), Fred Nelson and Kimmie Kim. The deal for the special was negotiated by Nelson, Addison Mehr, and Peter Schube on behalf of Kaur.

“Rupi is a standout artist who connects with her fans across multiple platforms and experiences, offering honesty with her art,” said Tyler Bern, head of content, Prime Video Canada, Australia and New Zealand, in a statement. “Prime Video is delighted to exclusively bring this live special to her fans and audiences across North America.”

Amazon Prime Video recently announced production on its first original scripted Canadian comedy The Lake, created by Julian Doucet and produced by AMAZE. Production on its first scripted Canadian Original The Kids in the Hall took place this summer.

Kaur is represented by Steven Himmelfarb of The Feldman Agency in Toronto.
