Indie distributor Vertical Entertainment has acquired director Andrea Dorfman’s Nova Scotia-shot Spinster for U.S. and U.K. distribution.

Penned by Jennifer Deyell (The Resurrection of Tony Gitone), the feature-length comedy follows Gaby (played by Brooklyn Nine-Nine‘s Chelsea Peretti), a woman dumped on her 39th birthday who fears becoming an old maid. Dorfman’s three previous film credits include Heartbeat (2014), Love That Boy (2003) and Parsley Days (2000).

Produced by Idlewild Films’ Bill Niven, Shut Up & Colour Pictures’ Marc Tetreault, Black Dog Films’ Jay Dahl and Woods Entertainment’s William Woods, Spinster made its world debut at the Whistler Film Festival this December. Most recently, the under $5-million feature starring Susan Kent (Trailer Park Boys), Nadia Tonen (Mr. D), Jonathan Watton (Murdoch Mysteries) and Amy Groening (Goon) made its U.S. premiere yesterday (March 9) at the 37th annual Miami Film Festival.

Toronto-based distributor Game Theory Films, which was launched by Woods early last year, holds the Canadian rights to Spinster. Both Vertical Entertainment and Game Theory Films plan to release the feature later this year, according to release about the acquisition.

Vertical Entertainment previously acquired the U.S. rights to Keith Behrman’s young adult drama Giant Little Ones and Barry Avrich’s documentary The Reckoning. This September, the distributor inked a multi-territory deal for Canadian sci-fi feature Code 8 from Jeff Chan and Chris Pare, picking up the worldwide rights. The deal excludes Canada, Germany, the Middle East, China, India, Japan, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Russia.
