Cameras are rolling in Toronto on Canadian Strain, a comedy from Toronto’s We’ll Be Over Here Productions.
Written and directed by Geordie Sabbagh (A Sunday Kind of Love), the comedy follows a boutique weed dealer (played by 2018 Toronto International Film Festival Rising Star Jessica Salgueiro, pictured) who is out of a job after cannabis is legalized. Ashleigh Rains (The Handmaid’s Tale), who co-founded We’ll Be Over Here with Sabbagh, is a producer on the project.
Canadian Strain also stars Colin Mochrie (Whose Line Is It Anyway?), Naomi Snieckus (Mr. D), Natalie Brown (The Strain), Benjamin Ayres (Saving Hope), Dion Johnstone (Star Falls), Hannah Spear (Filth City) and Nelu Handa (Workin’ Moms).
Sabbagh made his feature directorial debut with A Sunday Kind of Love, one of six films selected to compete in the 2014 IndieCan10K program, which selects six teams tasked with completing a feature for less than $10,000. The film was produced by Sabbagh and Broken Compass Films’ Ryan West (Detention Adventure). Rains served as a production manager and actress on the film.
Rains and Sabbagh previously collaborated on the BravoFACT-backed seven-minute short Tomorrow’s Shadows, starring veteran auteur David Cronenberg, Wendy Crewson (Room) and French-Canadian actress Karine Vanasse (Cardinal). Rains won Women in Film and Television – Toronto’s 2017 prize for best of showcase for the short.
