Indian Horse has sprinted out the gate, taking home more than $1.25 million at the Canadian box office since its theatrical premiere on April 13.

Based on Richard Wagamese’s award-winning novel, the film is directed by Stephen Campanelli and produced by Screen Siren Pictures, Terminal City Pictures and Devonshire Productions. The feature, adapted for the screen by Dennis Foon, follows Saul Indian Horse’s journey from a young boy torn from his Ojibway family and committed to a residential school, to his career as a pro hockey player.

Released in Canada by Elevation Pictures, the film premiered on 107 screens, taking an average $5,398 per screen in its first week. As of May 3, the film has brought in more than $1.25 million. According to Elevation, the film is on track to hit $1.5 million by May 11.

Indian Horse premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in September, before enjoying a lengthy run on the festival circuit. It picked up the People’s Choice Award at the Vancouver International Film Festival, and additional audience awards at the Calgary and Edmonton International Film Festivals.

The film shot in Sudbury and Peterborough Ontario and stars Sladen Peltier, Ajuawak Kapashesit and Forrest Goodluck as Saul.

Producers on the project are Christine Haebler, Trish Dolman and Paul Devonshire. Roger Frappier and Clint Eastwood exec produced.
