Veteran Canadian writer and producer Karen Walton has signed on to mentor the Canadian Film Centre’s next crop of television writers.

The Ginger Snaps writer was named the CFC’s executive producer in residence for the 2016 Bell Media Prime Time TV Program.

Walton has written for numerous series, including Queer as Folk, Flashpoint and Orphan Black, and penned the Gemini-award winning script for The Many Trials of One Jane Doe.

Last year, Walton signed a deal with New Metric Media to adapt Elisabeth de Mariaffi’s thriller The Devil You Know for TV. She’s also in development on two series: an adaptation of the Ava Lee crime novels for CBC and Alchemy, an original sci-fi series for Corus.

The Prime Time TV program, which is presented in association with ABC Signature Studios, aims to give writers real world story room experience as well as professional and project mentorship. Participants will spend three months working on an original series under the guidance of Walton, and will then have two months to develop their own original series concepts through workshops and story sessions.

The six to eight TV writers who will participate in this year’s program have yet to be named. The program will kick off Sept. 19.
