Netflix has ordered a six-episode original limited series set and filmed in Newfoundland from Toronto-born Jesse McKeown.
McKeown, who was the co-showrunner on Netflix’s The Umbrella Academy, is the currently untitled series’ creator, showrunner and executive producer. The writers are Toronto-based Karen Walton (Orphan Black) and Natty Zavitz (Edging) along with St. John’s-based Perry Chafe (Saint-Pierre). It is produced by Netflix with Sharon Hall (The Expanse) and Toronto-based Chris Hatcher (Sweet Angel Baby) executive producing alongside McKeown.
The project tells the story of a remote town in the province that is being terrorized by a mysterious sea creature, which forces a hard-bitten fisherman to protect his family, community and vanishing way of life.
“Newfoundland and Labrador has long been home to incredible stories, and we’re thrilled to see Netflix bring this ambitious new series to life here,” said PictureNL CEO Laura Churchill in a statement. “We look forward to working with the team to showcase all that Newfoundland and Labrador has to offer.”
The series will begin principal photography later this year, a Netflix spokesperson told Playback Daily.
Newfoundland and Labrador Premier Andrew Furey added “The province’s commitment to storytelling, talented crews and unique beauty ensure that this series will capture the spirit of our province.”
