The list of accolades for Sort Of continues to grow, as the CBC and HBO Max dramedy picked up Program of the Year at the 2022 Rockie Awards Gala.
Held during the Banff World Media Festival (BANFF) on Tuesday (June 14), the gala honoured a number of previously announced recipients, including the late Quebec director Jean-Marc Vallée, celebrated with the Canadian Award of Distinction, and Winnipeg’s Eagle Vision, which won the Innovative Producer Award. The soirée was hosted by actor and award-winning Canadian singer Jully Black.
Program of the Year was one of two previously unannounced awards handed out during the event. It recognizes a critically acclaimed or groundbreaking series released within the calendar year, while the Grand Jury Prize is awarded to the highest-scoring title in the Rockie Awards International Program Competition. It was won by director Marc Munden’s pandemic-themed U.K. TV movie Help.
Sort Of, co-created by its star Bilal Baig and director Fab Filippo, won a Peabody Award earlier this month for its representation of a queer, non-binary Pakistani-Canadian, in addition to winning Best Comedy Series at the Canadian Screen Awards in April. The award was accepted by Jennifer Kawaja (pictured right), executive producer and president, scripted English content at Sphere Media (formerly Sienna Films), and presented by Sally Catto (pictured left), GM, entertainment, factual and sports for CBC.
Other previously announced winners at the Rockie Awards Gala include Bela Bajaria, head of global TV at Netflix (Impact Award); actor and comedian Ana Gasteyer (Sir Peter Ustinov Comedy Award); actor and philanthropist Vivica A. Fox (Inclusion Award); Starstruck creator Rose Matafeo (the inaugural Creative Voice Award); and Ashley Lyle, Bart Nickerson and Jonathan Lisco, who won the Showrunner Award for their work on the Showtime series Yellowjackets.
