CBC, Max original Sort Of to conclude with third season

Co-creators Bilal Baig and Fab Filippo announced the creative decision to end the series in an Instagram post.

Peabody-winning Canadian comedy Sort Of will end its run after three seasons.

Co-creators Bilal Baig and Fab Filippo announced via Instagram on Thursday (Oct. 5) that they have made the creative decision to conclude the series with season three.

“We set out to tell a story about a kind of transition in Sabi’s life, and how those around them also change — and we feel in this coming season that story came to an end in a way that felt right for us,” wrote Baig and Filippo in the joint statement.

“We’re aware that series like ours, shows that feature queer and trans characters, tend to get cancelled early on, and we know that’s been happening a lot recently. We want to say that’s not what’s going down here. We made this third season knowing it would be our last,” they continued. “We’re also aware that this show is ending at a time when trans communities continue to be targeted and trans rights are being constantly attacked. Our hope is that this series can continue to affirm lives and spark conversations well after the final season drops. Sort Of will always exist, despite all the transphobia in our world.”

Produced by Sphere Media, the CBC and Max original comedy stars Baig (who also serves as co-showrunner and executive producer) as a gender-fluid Millennial who finds themself in transition in many aspects of their life after they opt out of a move to Europe to support the family they nanny for amidst a crisis.

The 8 x 30-minute final season will premiere in Canada on streamer CBC Gem on Nov. 17, releasing two episodes per week up to the series finale on Dec. 8 before beginning its run on linear in winter 2024. Max will also premiere season three in the U.S. in early 2024. Sphere Media holds worldwide distribution rights, with Abacus Media Rights handling sales outside of the U.S. and Latin America.

Filippo is co-showrunner, executive producer and director, with Shamim Sarif (Polarized) also serving as director on season three. Sphere’s Jennifer Kawaja and Bruno Dubé are EPs, and Andrea Glinski and Laura Perlmutter are co-EPs alongside scribes Ian Iqbal Rashid (Touch of Pink) and Tricia Fish (New Waterford Girl), who wrote the final season with Filippo and Baig.

Season three will include cameos from U.S. author Alok Vaid-Menon and actor Angelica Ross (Pose). Returning cast members are Baig, Gray Powell, Amanda Cordner, Ellora Patnaik, Supinder Wraich, Kaya Kanashiro, Aden Bedard, Raymond Cham Jr., Becca Blackwell, Ali Hassan, Kareem Vaude, Varun Saranga, Ayesha Mansur Gonsalves and Grace Lynn Kung.

Sort Of has won Best Comedy Series at the Canadian Screen Awards for two consecutive years, and won a Peabody in 2022 for its acclaimed first season, in addition to a number of nominations and accolades. Baig was also recently awarded the CMF Barrier Breaker Award at the second annual Trans Filmmakers Summit at the Toronto International Film Festival.

“While this will be a bittersweet farewell for all of us, we understand Bilal and Fab’s decision to wrap up the series at a time that feels right to them,” said Trish Williams, CBC’s executive director, scripted content, in a statement. “Thank you to Bilal, Fab, Sphere Media and the entire cast and crew for sharing their heartfelt vision and voices over three remarkable seasons and helping so many people feel reflected and understood for the first time.”
