Discovery+ has commissioned a new factual series, I Got Lucky, from Toronto’s Cream Productions.
The 14 x 30-minute show is headed to Discovery+ via a multi-territory pre-sale deal secured by Cineflix Rights.
It will launch on Discovery+ channels across the U.K., Germany, Iberia, the Nordics, Italy, Benelux, Poland, and Latin America. Cineflix is handling international sales in all global territories, including the U.S. A release date has not yet been announced.
I Got Lucky features footage and first-hand accounts from people who have lived through death-defying experiences, from accidents and explosions to extreme stunts gone wrong. The Discovery-commissioned show went from greenlight to delivery during the Covid-19 pandemic, according to Cream Productions president Kate Harrison Karman.
Cineflix Rights’ head of acquisitions Richard Life added that the deal “demonstrates the success of our strategy of building a ‘pre-sale and greenlight’ slate from our producer partners.” Cineflix Rights has recently put together similar pre-sale deal structures, including for McAvoy Media’s Inside Taronga Zoo and Law&Crime Productions’ Killer Cases.
The announcement comes during a fruitful patch for Toronto-based Cream, especially when it comes to working with global streaming services. Last week, Amazon Prime revealed it had commissioned a multi-episode sports docuseries on the Toronto Maple Leafs’ upcoming NHL season. All or Nothing: Toronto Maple Leafs, is produced by Amazon Studios in association with NHL Original Productions and Cream Films. The company is also in production on The Age of Samurai: Battle for Japan for Netflix. Over the past year, Cream says it has produced 10 series and over 70 hours of programming.
Outside of Canada, Discovery’s direct-to-consumer service Discovery+ launched on Jan. 4 in markets including the U.S., U.K, Ireland, India, the Nordics, Italy and the Netherlands. To date, Discovery has not announced any plans to launch the service in Canada.
