Netflix has acquired Mina Shum’s feature film Meditation Park in the U.S., U.K. and Australia.
The deals were negotiated by Mongrel International, which is handling global sales on the property. Domestically, Mongrel Media is handling theatrical distribution, with the film opened in select theatres across Canada on March 9.
Written, directed and produced by Shum, the feature follows a devoted Chinese-Canadian mother whose life is forever changed when she discovers another woman’s underwear in her husband’s pocket.
The comedy has also been picked up by international distributors including Israel’s Forum Film, Lebanon’s Italia Film and Cine Colombia. Encore Inflight also acquired the worldwide airline rights to the film.
According to a representative from Mongrel Media, all of the distribution deals were negotiated during the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) in September and the American Film Market in November.
Producers on Meditation Park include Raymond Massey and Stephen Hegyes. The film also stars Sandra Oh (Grey’s Anatomy), Cheng Pei Pei (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) and Tzi Mah (Arrival).
Meditation Park, which previously received funding through CBC’s Breaking Barriers Film Fund, made its debut in TIFF’s Contemporary World Cinema program in September 2017.
