Zip.ca to add downloads

Zip.ca is teaming with CinemaNow to provide movie downloads in Canada.

The Ottawa company says it will by the end of this year introduce a service that provides movies and TV episodes that can be downloaded to computers. The technology will also be able to be embedded in consumer electronics, allowing the video to be streamed directly to home and mobile devices, says Zip.

CinemaNow provides a similar service in the U.S., distributing a catalogue of some 14,000 films, shorts, concerts and programs.

The partnership stands to be the first large-scale service of its kind in Canada. Zip.ca currently offers 72,000 DVDs via mail and online ordering.

‘We hope to fuel membership and growth by becoming consumers’ destination for seamless digital movie access — a one-stop entertainment shop,’ said CEO Curt Miller, in a statement.

This deal will also establish CinemaNow in the Canadian marketplace. In the U.S. its parent company Sonic Solutions distributes content under a partnership with Blockbuster.
