CBC, Radio-Canada, TFO and Toon-A-Vision have greenlit The Adventures of Toopy & Binoo, a new 2D-animated preschool series copro from Montreal’s Echo Media and Halifax-based Huminah Huminah Animation.
This 39 x 7-minute revival of Echo Media’s Toopy & Binoo series from the mid-2000s went into pre-production on September 30, and French- and English-language versions will be delivered in spring 2026. The series focuses on the adventures of the titular mouse and cat.
The Société de Développement des Entreprises Culturelles, Shaw Rocket Fund, Canada Media Fund and the Eastlink TV Independent Production Fund Program have all contributed funding to The Adventures of Toopy & Binoo. Echo Media is distributing the new series and will start working on securing presales at Kidscreen Summit in February.
Based on Dominique Jolin’s kids books of the same name, the original Toopy & Binoo series (104 x five minutes) premiered in Canada and went on to air in 180 countries around the world, including the US (PBS KIDS), France (Tiji) and Italy (RAI). More recently, Echo Media produced an 80-minute feature film (pictured) that premiered theatrically in August 2023 via distributor Sphere Films. The brand’s YouTube channel currently has around 118,000 subscribers.
“We’re excited to partner with our colleagues at Echo Media to help reboot this iconic Canadian series,” said Marie McCann, senior director of children’s content at CBC Kids, in a statement. “Children who grew up laughing along to Toopy and Binoo’s slapstick antics are raising families of their own now and we hope that the duo will giggle their way into the hearts of a new generation of kids.”
