Strong opening for The Statement

Norman Jewison’s The Statement brought in $40,000 in the 10 days following its Dec. 12 release on three Toronto screens.

On its opening weekend, The Statement’s per screen average was $5,833, compared to $4,651 per screen for the opening weekend of Mambo Italiano’s English Canada release. Distributed in Canada by Toronto-based ThinkFilm, the suspense drama stars Michael Caine and is coproduced by Robert Lantos’ Serendipity Point Films, France’s Odessa Films and Company Pictures out of the U.K.

The Statement brought in US$57,621 during its first week in U.S. theaters, where it is distributed through Sony Pictures Classics.

Also from ThinkFilm, The Gospel of John, released Oct. 24, grossed $375,000 at the domestic box office as of Dec. 22, well on its way to exceeding the $400,000 ThinkFilm expects to gross in Ontario.

The critically acclaimed The Triplets of Belleville, an animated feature produced primarily in Montreal, was released on six Quebec screens by Odeon Films Dec. 18 and brought in $23,661 from its opening weekend, with a wider Canadian release planned for January.

The Canada/Belgium/France coproduction, from French animator Sylvain Chomet, has already been voted best animated feature by the New York Film Critics Circle and best foreign-language film by the Boston Film Critics. It has been nominated for best foreign film at the Independent Spirit Awards and is likely to go up against Pixar’s Finding Nemo for best animation at the Oscars. South of the border, Triplets’ box-office total was US$326,071 as of Dec. 22, three weeks after being released by Sony Pictures Classics on six screens.

Alliance Atlantis released Blizzard (Knightscove/Holedigger Films/AAC) Dec. 12. The family Christmas flick grossed $440,000 over 10 days on 135 screens, for a per screen average of $3,259. Directed by LeVar Burton, Blizzard stars Brenda Blethyn, Christopher Plummer and Whoopi Goldberg as the voice of the reindeer Blizzard. It was shot in Toronto in March 2002.

Quebec box-office smash, Denys Arcand’s Les Invasions barbares, has brought in $477,242 since its Nov. 21 release in English Canada through Odeon. The film’s Quebec box-office total is more than $6.2 million and the feature has been submitted for a best foreign-language nom at the 76th Academy Awards and won best non-European film at the European Film Awards Dec. 6.
