Rogers Media on Monday moved a step closer to a national footprint for its Citytv network by launching a new outlet in Saskatchewan on Canada Day.
Rogers Media flipped the switch to turn Saskatchewan Communications Network (SCN) into Citytv Saskatchewan, which allowed the broadcaster to expand its national platform for Citytv programming.
Acquired shows to air on Citytv Saskatchewan out of the gate includes Judge Judy, CityLine and a double-shot of Two and a Half Men on Monday nights.
In the pipeline are new Canadian-content series like The Bachelor Canada, Seed and Package Deal, in addition to locally-produced programming to be commissioned from Saskatchewan producers and shortly to be unveiled.
In all, Rogers Media is to commit 23% of revenue generated by Citytv Saskatchewan to indie production, as part of a licensing deal with the CRTC.
Launching the Saskatchewan outlet also follows Citytv expanding into Quebec by acquiring TV station Metro 14 in Montreal and into western Canada through an affiliate deal with The Jim Pattison Group.
Next in line for Rogers Media is an expected deal for a presence in Newfoundland as Citytv builds out in Atlantic Canada.
