Hollywood’s superhero craze is heading to Toronto next year, with news that Warner Bros.’ DC Comics-based Suicide Squad will shoot in the city in 2015.
The movie, to be directed by David Ayer (Fury) and based on DC Entertainment villains seeking redemption, will check into Pinewood Toronto Studios in February to start pre-production.
The cameras will then roll in and around Toronto from mid-April to September.
The Suicide Squad shoot will take place at Pinewood before Guillermo del Toro moves onto its stages for Pacific Rim 2; del Toro’s The Strain TV series for FX is shooting currently in Toronto at Cinespace Studios.
The Warner Bros. pic, with a working title Bravo 14, will star Will Smith and Jared Leto, alongside Tom Hardy, Margot Robbie, Jai Courtney and Cara Delevingne. Charles Roven and Richard Suckle are producing.
Suicide Squad is set for an August 5, 2016 release.
The studio tentpole heading to Toronto follows Adam Sandler’s Pixels shooting in the city this summer, while on the other side of the ledger, Toronto recently lost the Robert Pattinson and Robert DeNiro-starrer Idol’s Eye.
The film’s producers shut down production on the action thriller by director Olivier Assayas, and are expected to shoot later on in a rival locale.
