Pinewood Toronto renames stage in memory of Norman Jewison

The announcement comes one year after the beloved director and producer's death.

Pinewood Toronto Studios has named its Stage 3 after beloved Canadian director and producer Norman Jewison.

The sound stage, now known as The Norman Jewison Stage, is located at at 225 Commissioners St. The facility is 1,394 square metres with a length of 46 metres, a width of 30 metres and a height of 12 metres. Some of the latest productions to utilize the stage include Star Trek: Discovery, It: Chapter 2 and Shazam!

“Norman was born in Toronto and passionate about the Canadian film industry and would have been deeply proud of this recognition of his services and hard work,” said Jewison’s wife, Lynne St. David-Jewison, in a statement.

Jewison, whose resume includes the creation of the Canadian Film Centre (CFC) in 1988, died at 97 in his L.A. home a year ago today (Jan. 20). Born in 1926, Jewison and his work were nominated for 46 Academy Awards, winning 12, including five for his 1967 mystery drama In The Heat of the Night and three for his 1987 romantic comedy Moonstruck. Jewison was a member of the Order of Canada and in 2010 was presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Directors Guild of America.

Alumni from the CFC include Mina Shum, Bruce McDonald, Christina Jennings, Don McKellar, Ingrid Veninger, Sarah Polley, Michael Ondaatje, Charles Officer and Jennifer Podemski, among many others.

Pinewood Toronto Studios is owned by U.K-based studio operator Pinewood Group, which acquired Bell Media’s ownership stake in the lakefront Toronto studios in 2023. Bell Media acquired a majority stake in the studios in 2018.
