Shorts fest to include Twilight star

Officials of the CFC Worldwide Short Film Festival avoid the word ‘longer,’ but they did say ‘bigger’ when announcing the 281 shorts — culled from a mind-numbing 4,046 entries — during a packed press conference in Toronto on Tuesday.

The live-action, documentary, animation, and experimental films were picked from 34 countries and include a record 34 world premieres.

‘We have more premieres than ever before, more diverse programming and an incredible lineup of films directed by women — we are really seeing a shift in who’s standing behind the camera,’ said festival director Eileen Arandiga.

Twilight heartthrob Robert Pattinson stars in the 14-minute The Summer House from British director Daisy Gil, which will have its North American premiere in the popular Celebrity Shorts program, although there was no word if he’ll attend. His Twilight cast mate Rachelle Lefevre is on this year’s jury.

Also new this year, festival goers can download a free iPhone app for updates on films and events.

International buyers, delegates and industry professionals are expected at a full slate of conference and market events held throughout this six-day event, which opens June 1.
