Andrea Martin joins Working The Engels as lead

Working the Engels, the Global Television comedy from Miss Congeniality‘s Katie Ford and sister Jane Ford, has attached Andrea Martin as its lead.

The 12-episode series from Halfire-CORE Entertainment begins production in Toronto this fall.

Katie Ford, an American who was raised in Toronto, where she is based, also penned the pilot script for Leilah and Jen, an Entertainment One comedy for the CBC.

Andrea Martin, who will leave a current star-turn on Pippin on Broadway to topline in Working the Engels, will play the overly confident matriarch of the Engel clan, who mixes both mama bear motherly love and myopic self-involvement.

“I am so looking forward to shooting another TV series in Canada and working with Katie and Jane Ford – I have been an admirer of theirs for years,” said Martin in a statement Tuesday.

“And to get to stay in Toronto for an extended period is icing on the cake. I couldn’t feel luckier or more excited. It’s going to be a great show and I’m thrilled to be a part of it,” she added.

Besides her Broadway work, SCTV alumnae Martin has extensive film and TV credits, including voice work on The Simpsons, and The Rugrats Movie, and guest appearances on 30 Rock and Nurse Jackie.

Her film appearances include The Producers, Wag the Dog, Hedwig and the Angry Inch and My Big Fat Greek Wedding.

Martin hosted the 2005 Genies and pulled out of co-hosting duties on the 2012 Canadian TV kudosfest at the eleventh hour for an acting gig on a CBS pilot.

Working The Engels will be produced by Katie Ford, Jane Ford, Howard Busgang, Tom Nursall, and Noreen Halpern.
