The CineCoup film accelerator has unveiled the top five projects that will head to next week’s Banff World Media Festival, where the project-vetting process will climax.
The filmmaking teams of Uprising (Alberta), Alien Abduction (B.C.), BAD (B.C.), Grade Nine (B.C.) and Wolfcop (Saskatchewan) will pitch their projects to a panel of industry experts on June 10.
CineCoup also chose Natalia Napierski as the Uberfan who will travel to Banff with the teams and sit on the Banff selection panel.
The panel includes Cineplex Entertainment EVP Michael Kennedy, Serendipity Point Films producer Robert Lantos, eOne co-president Noah Segal and CineCoup Uberfan Napierski.
The top project, which will receive up to $1 million in production financing and a guaranteed release in Cineplex theatres, will be announced following the pitch session.
The 15-week accelerator program last month struck a partnership with Telefilm Canada. Telefilm will invest in the winning project as part of its strategy to increase support for commercial filmmaking as part of its New Ways of Discovering Canadian Talent marketing campaign.
CineCoup president of distribution and sales Brad Pelman recently travelled to the Cannes Film Festival in May to shop the top 10 slate to international agents and buyers.
The accelerator launched last winter with around 90 producer-director teams that submitted their projects for feedback and boosting from film fans as part of the program’s social selection funnel.
According to stats provided by CineCoup, its cinecoup.com homepage received more than 2 million page views during the process’s first 75 days, beginning Feb. 28.
The average visitor spent around five minutes on the site. That suggests users are staying on the site to watch the video content and filmmaking “missions,” which also increases the likelihood that they are sharing the content, Pelman told Playback last month.
The CineCoup video content itself, which includes film trailers and mission videos, has netted 325,000 views, while 73% of site traffic is from Canada, 13% from the U.S., and 14% from international territories.
Stay tuned for some behind-the-scenes intel from the CineCoup top 5 later this week.
