Avi Federgreen has unveiled his first acquisitions for his newly-launched distribution shingle Indiecan Entertainment, including Sean Cisterna’s Moon Point, which he fittingly executive-produced.
The veteran Canadian film producer in November launched himself into indie distribution to release low-budget Canadian movies that bigger industry players may ignore as the films make their way through the festival circuit and their directors and producers face a long grind of getting exposure and an elusive theatrical distribution deal.
An example is Moon Point, written by Robert Lazar and produced by Cisterna and Christian Potenza, a road-trip movie that had festival berths in Calgary, Sudbury and Edmonton, and won the audience award at the Film North Festival.
The film stars Nick McKinlay, Paula Brancati, Kyle Mac, Kristen Gutoskie, and portrays a socially awkward 23-year-old on a bizarre road trip to track down his elementary school crush.
Indiecan’s other acquisition is Charles Wilkinson’s feature documentary Peace Out, which explores the role of British Columbia’s Peace River in fuelling North America’s thirst for energy and picked up an audience award at the Vancouver International Film Festival.
Moon Point and Peace Out will get commercial play in Canadian theatres early in the new year.
