TSN picks up March Madness package

If its Tuesday, it must be another marquee TV sport property pick-up for TSN.

This time it’s next month’s NCAA March Madness tournament, which last year aired on The Score.

The latest BCE-era acquisition for TSN and TSN2 will see the CTV-owned channels air the 2011 NCAA men’s basketball championship, starting on March 17.

“It’s hard to find an event with as much drama and excitement as NCAA March Madness,” TSN president Stewart Johnston said Thursday of the wall-to-wall U.S. college hoops action landing on the specialty sports channel.

Equally hard is finding a marquee TV sports property held by a rival Canadian broadcaster that isn’t likely to land sometime soon in TSN’s corner, now that new owner BCE is looking for prestige content to push down its expanding digital platforms.

TSN has just acquired the rights to the Tour de France pro cycling race in July, the exclusive local rights to the EURO 2012 and 2016 European football championships from the Union of European Football Associations, and to a package of Major League Soccer games involving pro teams in Toronto and Montreal.

As part of its March Madness coverage, TSN will produce an original studio show for pre- and post-game analysis, along with live look-ins to various games.

All games on TSN and TSN2 will air nationally in high definition.
