Feature documentary The Cannons (Brothers on Ice), executive produced by NBA superstar Russell Westbrook, has been acquired by TSN for Canada and NHL Network for the U.S. and the rest of the world, with a North American debut set for Dec. 16.
Helmed by Toronto-based directors Steven Hoffner and AJ Messier, and premiered at DOC NYC in 2021, the film profiles the Fort Dupont Cannons, a predominantly African-American hockey club based in one of America’s toughest neighborhoods in southeast Washington D.C.
The primary focus is on Rayvon Hall and Robert Lynch (pictured), two Cannons players in their senior year of high school, as they attempt to keep the team alive during a tumultuous season while also pursuing their respective goals: Lynch intending to apply for a spot as a police cadet, and Hall clinging to the dream of playing college hockey.
The Cannons (Brothers on Ice) is produced by Toronto’s 383 Pictures and Hogtown Studios in association with Zero World Media. Co-helmers Hoffner and Messier also serve as executive producers, alongside Russell Westbrook, Raynard Westbrook, Donnell Beverly, Robert Walker Branchaud and Rob Ford.
