Toronto-based distribution company Game Theory Films has acquired the Canadian rights to the feature documentary Captain Newfoundland, directed by Jamie Miller and Mike Feehan.
The film, co-produced by Miller’s St. John’s-based Seachange Films and Toronto-based 86 Media House, tells the story of Newfoundland and Labrador media icon Geoff Stirling. In addition to co-founding local TV network NTV, Stirling incorporated a variety of interests and passions outside of the typical corporate realm into his work, including Eastern mysticism and comics, as seen through the creation of comic book character Captain Newfoundland.
According to the filmmakers, the project blends archival footage, animation and cinematic storytelling to explore Stirling’s influence on the culture of Newfoundland and beyond.
Stirling was born in 1921 and, in 2009, was awarded the Order of Newfoundland and Labrador. He died in 2013.
Captain Newfoundland is currently in production and is made with the support of Telefilm Canada, PictureNL and Rogers. It is slated for a 2026 theatrical release.
“This documentary taps into the myth, mystery and sheer creativity of Stirling’s vision,” said Hilary Hart, co-president of Game Theory Films, in a statement. “We’re thrilled to help bring this story to audiences who may have never encountered it before.”
