Newfoundland and Labrador is set to augment its film and television industry through the construction of a $50 million, 75,000 square-foot soundstage.
Currently in the design phase, the studio will be constructed by Andrew Barnsley (Schitt’s Creek) and Brandon Davis‘ company Latitude 47, and is scheduled to break ground in 2026. The two are also partners in Toronto- and L.A-based prodco Project 10 Productions (Son of a Critch), where Barnsley is CEO and Davis is COO.
Latitude 47 Studios will be built in the town of Bauline, about 27 kilometres northwest of St. John’s and 18 kilometres from the St. John’s International Airport. The studio will include 50,000 square feet of office space. Advisors for the project include TriBros Studios president Peter Apostolopoulos, according to a news release.
Following the construction of the studio, an additional 25,000 square-foot soundstage, a backlot for external shoots, post-production facilities, equipment rental, and a potential educational facility in association with St. John’s Film School are being planned for phase two of the build. The studio will be privately financed, a spokesperson for the project told Playback Daily.
The project was catalyzed by a strategic assessment and roadmap commissioned by PictureNL earlier this year. The report determined a multi-purpose facility could expand the province’s industry into the winter months, create jobs and increase the province’s attractiveness to productions and equipment suppliers.
According to the release, total production volume for Newfoundland and Labrador is expected to surpass $100 million in 2025-26, a first for the province. Newfoundland’s recent productions include Apple TV+’s Severance, Netflix’s untitled Newfoundland series, CBC’s Saint-Pierre and Citytv’s Hudson & Rex.
“Combined with competitive incentives and a skilled workforce, this facility will help us meet growing demand, attract larger productions, and create year-round employment — strengthening local talent and positioning our province as a world-class production destination,” said PictureNL CEO Laura Churchill in a statement.
