Ricardo Trogi’s comedy 1995 continues to draw in audiences, grossing more than $1.5 million during its first 12 days in theatres.
The film is showing in 78 theatres on 88 screens across Quebec and New Brunswick, according to distributor Immina Films. The feature initially took in over $700,000 during its first five days in theatres.
The promote the film, the crew toured Quebec cities, including Granby, Sherbrooke, Gatineau, Ste-Adèle, St-Jérôme, St-Eustache, Jonquière, Chicoutimi, St-Raymond, Trois-Rivières and Lachenaie.
This is the fourth film in the filmmaker’s series, which began with 1981 in 2009, followed by 1987 in 2014. The third film, 1991, was the highest-grossing Canadian film in the 2018 box office, earning more than $3 million. The three films were previously produced by Go Films, which was acquired by Sphere Films in 2018.
Quebec actor Jean-Carl Boucher (pictured) returns to the lead role as a fictionalized version of Trogi who embarks on a journey to shoot 20 short films around the world as a contestant on a Radio-Canada reality series.
According to a release, Trogi is considered the Canadian director with the most million-dollar Quebec films, a total of seven: Quebec-Montreal, Horloge biologique, 1987, Le mirage, 1991, Le guide de la famille parfaite and 1995.
This marks the ninth film for Trogi’s and is produced by Marie-Claude Poulin of Sphere Films. Immina Films is the distributor in Canada, with Amuz Distribution handling international sales.
Production on the film is supported by SODEC, Telefilm Canada, Radio-Canada, the Quebecor Fund, as well as provincial and federal tax credits.
