Netflix has commissioned a documentary film about the end of the Montreal Expos baseball franchise 20 years ago.
The untitled doc is produced by Montreal’s Attraction, and marks the first greenlight under the company’s first-look deal with Netflix.
Directed by Jean-François Poisson, the documentary will look at the setbacks that led to the Expos franchise leaving Montreal in 2004. The franchise relocated to Washington, D.C. in 2005 to become the Washington Nationals.
Executive producers include Marie-Christine Pouliot, Attraction’s head of documentaries, and Attraction president Richard Speer.
“The Expos were the first MLB team outside of the U.S,, and despite their departure from Montreal, they continue to have passionate fans to this day. This film will tell the story of the team through the eyes of those who lived it,” said Speer in a statement.
Netflix inked a first-look deal with Attraction last November for the development and production of original French-language films for the platform.
