Geek Girl goes to camera in U.K.

Production on the Waterside Studios series, produced by RubyRock Pictures and Aircraft Pictures, will also take place in Canada.

Canada/U.K. copro series Geek Girl is getting off the ground overseas.

Corus Entertainment’s scripted content venture Waterside Studios has announced cameras are now rolling in the U.K. on the live-action series produced by London-based RubyRock Pictures and Toronto-based Aircraft Pictures.

Production on the 10 x 30-minute series will continue in Canada later this summer, with the broadcast premiere slated for YTV and StackTV in Canada, and worldwide on Netflix next year, according to a news release.

Nelvana will distribute the series globally thereafter.

The show is creatively produced by Zoë Rocha for RubyRock Pictures and by Anthony Leo and Andrew Rosen for Aircraft Pictures.

Based on the series of novels published by HarperCollins UK and written by British writer Holly Smale, whose life loosely inspired the story, Geek Girl features an awkward teenager on the autism spectrum who becomes a model.

Jess Ruston, Sameera Steward, Smale and Sarah Morgan are the lead writers on the adaptation, which is directed by Declan O’Dwyer.

House of the Dragon actor Emily Carey (pictured) leads the cast, which also includes Sarah Parish (Stay Close), Emmanuel Imani (Riches), Liam Woodrum (Love in Zion National), Zac Looker (A Kind of Spark), Tim Downie (Outlander), Jemima Rooper (Flowers in the Attic: The Origin), Daisy Jelley (London Kills) and newcomer Rochelle Harrington.

“From our YTV and StackTV platforms, to our investment in Aircraft Pictures and launch of Waterside Studios, and Nelvana distributing the series globally, we have leveraged our full operation to bring Geek Girl to audiences worldwide,” said Colin Bohm, EVP content and corporate strategy, Corus Entertainment, in a statement.

Geek Girl was originally developed with the assistance of the BFI’s Young Audiences Content Fund.
