A PTN has greenlit a third season of Rezolution Pictures’ documentary series Gespe’gewa’gi: The Last Land, about the First Nations commercial fishing industry, on the heels of post-production wrapping on the second season.
The 9 x 30-minute third season will begin production this month, with Ernest Webb (Cree) and Greg Lawrence, Heather Condo (Mi’gmaq), Eliza Knockwood (Mi’kmaq) directing, according to a news release. The third season is produced by Lisa M. Roth with production supervisor Denis McCready, production manager Brittany LeBorgne (Mohawk) and production coordinator Shantae Gibson (Kainai).
The 10 x 30-minute second season of the series, produced by Montreal-based Rezolution Pictures, is scheduled to air later this year at a yet-to-be announced date. It features Pictou Landing First Nation and Sipekne’katik in Nova Scotia, as well as Listuguj and Gesgapegiag in Quebec, said the release, which notes the season will have English and Mi’kmaq versions.
Season two is co-executive produced by Webb and Lawrence, and produced by Roth. Webb, Greg Lawrence, and Courtney Montour (Mohawk) direct the second season.
Season three will bring stories in English and Mi’kmaq from Mi’kma’ki communities in Unama’ki, the Land of Fog (Cape Breton) and Epekwitk, also known Prince Edward Island.
The first season features the Mi’gmaq fishers of Listuguj, Que., and debuted in winter 2021. The entire season is available on APTN lumi and CBC Gem.
“We’ll continue to learn about the science and conservation efforts surrounding the fisheries, the triumphs and challenges that come with running them, whether it be commercial, Food-Social-Ceremonial or Mi’kmaq Treaty Fishing and the rich cultural and political histories in the context of both modern and traditional Mi’kma’ki,” said the news release.
Co-founded by Webb, Rezolution Pictures is a producer — alongside Winnipeg’s OP Little Bird — on the new Crave and APTN lumi original series Little Bird, which won an audience award at Series Mania in France in March.
