Indiecan Entertainment launches international sales division

Founder Avi Federgreen will launch the division's initial sales slate at the European Film Market in Berlin.

Indiecan Entertainment has launched an international sales division, bringing its initial slate of films to the European Film Market (EFM) later this week.

The new division, named Indiecan International, is led by Indiecan Entertainment founder Avi Federgreen, who will attend EFM in Berlin to debut the sales arm and the slate. EFM runs from Feb. 16 to 22, during the Berlin International Film Festival.

Federgreen said the goal of the international sales arm is to “help independent filmmakers and marginalized voices get as much exposure and eyeballs on their stories as possible,” in a statement.

Indiecan will bring three Canadian scripted titles and one U.K. doc to EFM. Among the Canadian films is the psychological thriller L’Inhumain (Nish Media), written, directed and produced by Jason Brennan of the Kitigan Zibi Anishinabeg, which will screen in Berlin as part of Telefilm Canada’s Perspective Canada initiative. The film follows a neurosurgeon who finds himself in the path of a mythological creature called a Wendigo.

North American distribution rights for L’Inhumain were acquired by Indiecan’s genre-focused distribution arm Red Water Entertainment in 2022, while Indiecan Entertainment acquired international sales rights.

Jules Arita Koostachin’s drama feature Broken Angel (pictured), about a First Nations woman fleeing an abusive relationship with her daughter, and short film MisTik are the other Canadian titles on the slate. Koostachin, who is a band member of Attawapiskat First Nation, wrote, directed and produced both titles, with Patti Poskitt also producing Broken Angel.

The projects were acquired by Indiecan Entertainment ahead of their world premieres at the 2022 imagineNATIVE Film + Media Arts Festival.

Rounding out the slate is the U.K. documentary My Everest, directed by Carl Woods, about a man with cerebral palsy who journeys to the Mount Everest base camp on horseback to defy societal expectations. Woods produced the doc under the Birmingham, U.K. prodco Zedmill alongside Annika Ranin and Jasmin Morrison of London’s Unmannered Limited, and Sandra Spethmann.
