Newtown, Penn.-based Virgil Films has acquired U.S. rights to Toronto-based Federgreen Entertainment’s dark family drama Home Free (pictured).
President Avi Federgreen negotiated the deal with Virgil president and CEO Joe Amodei and co-president Tim Maggiani at the Cannes Film Market. Virgil is planning a same-day theatrical and digital release in Q4 this year, with Federgreen’s Indiecan Entertainment releasing the film domestically, a spokesperson for the company told Playback Daily. An exact release date has yet to be determined.
Home Free was produced by Federgreen, Emily Foster, Lucky Dime Films’ Laura Tremblay, JPO & Co Entertainment’s Jen Pogue, Filmcoop’s Emily Andrews and Bellavita Productions’ Julia Tomasone. Filming occurred from March to April 2023 in Paris, Ont.
The film, which Federgreen also wrote with Reese Eveneshen (For the Sake of Vicious), marks his feature directorial debut. It follows three estranged sisters who return home and learn their father is dying. His final wish is to repair the relationship between the sisters, but personal conflict ensues.
Home Free stars Michelle Nolden (Heartland), Tara Spencer-Nairn (Corner Gas), Natalie Brown (Nightmare Alley), Art Hindle (Porky’s) and Jill Frappier (Hudson & Rex).
“I’m very excited to be working with Virgil Films who are passionate about the films they represent and believe in films that push boundaries in a unique and innovative way,” said Federgreen in a statement. “I can’t wait for audiences to experience this emotionally packed film.”
