Hulu picks up U.S. rights to Overlord and the Underwoods

The marblemedia and Cloudco-produced sitcom is bound for Hulu this summer after being jointly co-commissioned last year by CBC, Nickelodeon International, ITV and BYUtv.

Hulu has acquired U.S. streaming rights to the sci-fi family sitcom Overlord and the Underwoods.

The 20 x 30-minute series was shot in southern Ontario and created by showrunner Anthony Q. Farrell (The Office, Secret Life of Boys, The Parker Andersons/Amelia Parker) and Ryan Wiesbrock (Buddy Thunderstruck, Holly Hobbie) of U.S. prodco Cloudco Entertainment. It’s produced by Toronto-based prodco marblemedia and Cloudco.

The story of an alien fugitive hiding out with human relatives is due to land on Hulu this summer after being jointly co-commissioned last year by CBC, Nickelodeon International, ITV and BYUtv. The original, live-action series premiered on CBC Gem last fall.

Overlord and the Underwoods is produced with the financial participation of the Shaw Rocket Fund and the Cogeco Fund, and was developed through funding from the Bell Fund Slate Development Program. Cloudco Entertainment and Distribution360, a marblemedia company, hold worldwide distribution rights for the series.

The ensemble cast includes Troy Feldman as the eponymous intergalactic character; Patrice Goodman and Darryl Hinds as the parents of the family; and Ari Resnick and Kamaia Fairburn as their children. Jayne Eastwood plays their neighbour, while Jann Arden portrays the voice of R0-FL, Overlord’s sidekick. The series was nominated for three Canadian Screen Awards in 2022.

“We are thrilled this series will be reaching new fans on Hulu,” said Mark Bishop, executive producer and co-CEO at marblemedia, in a statement. “We know Overlord and the Underwoods will delight their audiences and fit right in amongst Hulu’s premium content offering.”
