Alliance Releasing, Canada’s biggest independent distributor of feature films and home videos, has announced that the Aug. 1 release of Swan Princess has sold 300,000 units in the home video market across the country.
Patrice Theroux, executive v-p Alliance Releasing, in Montreal, says 1.1 million units of the companies various titles have already been sold to the home video market in 1995 with a forecast for Alliance’s overall sell-through, not including rentals, of over 1.5 million units by the end of the year. Anticipated revenues are $21 million.
In other news from Alliance, the New Line Cinema special effects action film Mortal Kombat topped the Canadian box office for the weekend of Aug. 18-20 with national box office receipts of $1.98 million. The film was launched on 206 screens across Canada for a per-screen take of just over $9,600.
The Quebec share of the gross was $439,000.
According to Alliance, Mortal Kombat is its fourth release in the past 12 months to be ranked number one at the Canadian box office. The others were The Mask, Dumb & Dumber and Pulp Fiction.
