Canadian writer/director Richie Mehta’s limited series Delhi Crime has won the International Emmy for best drama series.
The India-produced Netflix original won its category ahead of Criminal: UK (U.K.), El Jardín de Bronce (Argentina) and Charité (Germany), making it the first Indian series to ever win an International Emmy for best drama. The awards were announced Monday (Nov. 24) by the International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences.
The seven-episode police series, produced by Mumbai’s Golden Karaven and L.A.-based Ivanhoe Pictures, had its world premiere at Sundance Film Festival. Written and directed by Mehta, the New Delhi-shot project is inspired by the 2012 investigation into the rape of a young woman in India.
Netflix announced it had picked up the worldwide distribution rights to the series in January 2019. The series stars Shefali Shah (Monsoon Wedding), Adil Hussain (Life of Pi), Denzil Smith (The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel), Rasika Dugal (Qissa), Rajesh Tailang (Siddarth) and Yashaswini Dayama (Dear Zindagi).
Ivanhoe Pictures’ Robert Friedland, Sidney Kimmel and Brian Kornreich are producers on the series. Golden Karavan’s Aaron Kaplan, Jeff Sagansky, Florence Sloan, Apoorva Bakshi, Pooja Kohli and Sanjay Bachani serve as executive producers alongside John Penotti, Killian Kerwin and Michael Hogan from Ivanhoe.
Mehta’s other credits include the feature films Amal (2008), Siddharth (2013) and I’ll Follow You Down (2014).
