Cop drama Hudson & Rex has been acquired by UKTV’s Alibi, TV4 in Sweden, TV2 in Denmark and Forta in Spain.
The Citytv original, produced by Shaftesbury and Pope Productions, is distributed internationally by Munich-based producer and distributor Beta Film GmbH, which is the producer and rights holder of the Austrian format upon which Hudson & Rex is based.
The show was previously licensed to TNT Serie (Germany), France Télévisions, CLT-UFA (Netherlands) and NBCUniversal (for Eastern Europe and Africa), in addition to LRT (Lithuania), LTV (Latvia), Telemundo (Puerto Rico), Channel 12 (Uruguay) and Belleville Group (Latin America).
A sale to the U.S. is also in the works, according to a press release from Beta Films.
Shaftesbury has strong links with UKTV’s Alibi, with both Frankie Drake Mysteries and Murdoch Mysteries airing on the channel. In addition, London-based Alexandra Finlay, a former executive at UKTV, joined Shaftesbury in March of last year in the role of senior director of creative and coproductions, as the Canadian company looks to expand its footprint in the European copro market.
The sales come as Hudson & Rex continues production on its third season in St John’s, NL. Production was temporarily halted on Aug. 7 after two members of the cast and crew tested positive for COVID-19. Filming resumed on Aug. 10. Executive producers on the John Reardon-starring show include Christina Jennings and Scott Garvie from Shaftesbury, Paul Pope from Pope Productions. Lesley Grant serves as creative producer.
