Shaw Rocket Fund and the Canada Media Fund (CMF) have distributed $3.3 million through the inaugural round of its CMF-SRF Kids Digital Animated Series Program.
Projects set to receive coin include Vérité Films’ Jeremy and Tunebug, Epic Story Media’s Piper’s Pony Tales and Di-O-Matic’s Li’l Santa, which all received $350,000 from the CMF and $175,000 from the Shaw Rocket Fund.
Jeremy and Tunebug, which begins its first phase of production this fall, revolves around a version of Juno-nominated singer-songwriter Jeremy Fisher Junior and Tunebug, his magical recording studio on wheels. The series, which is produced in association with Jeremy Fisher Music and Hidden Pony Records & Management, uses Fisher’s debut children’s album for various stories and songs. It also includes digital shorts, a play-to-read-stories app and a website. Fisher will also perform at various festivals and events across the summer to promote Jeremy and Tunebug.
CarpeDiem Film and TV, the Montreal prodco behind La Course des Tuques (“Racetime”) and La guerre des Tuques 3D (“Snowtime!”), also received $333,333 from the CMF and $166,667 from the Shaw Rocket Fund towards its project CHAOS.
Oxus Films’ Ara’s Imaginarium also netted $350,000, with $233,333 of that coming from the CMF and $116,667 from the Shaw Rocket Fund, while Tobo’s Dounia picked up $141,667 from the Shaw Rocket Fund and $283,333 from the CMF.
Finally, Big Bad Boo Productions’ Galapagos X, a project focused on the adventures of four science explorers and a bird, walked away with $450,000 in total, with $300,000 in funding coming from the CMF and $150,000 from the Shaw Rocket Fund.
Unveiled in March, the fund is a collaboration that aims to support the creation of Canadian digital animated series for young audiences on digital platforms. In particular, the program is geared towards animated series in their first season, with priority given to titles with the potential for multiple seasons and the innovative use of technology. The Kids Digital Animated Series Program marks the first time both the CMF and the Shaw Rocket Fund have partnered on a program.
