Filming is underway in Toronto on Jay Baruchel’s new feature Random Acts of Violence, produced and distributed by Elevation Pictures.
Based on Jimmy Palmiotti and Justin Gray’s graphic novel of the same name, the film tells the story of a group of friends who go on a road trip from Toronto to New York City for Comic-Con and realize people are being killed in a similar fashion to the deaths in the comic “Slasherman.”
Baruchel, who will direct and star in the project, co-wrote the screenplay with longtime writing partner Jesse Chabot (Goon: Last of the Enforcers).
The This is the End actor is also producing alongside Elevation co-president Noah Segal (The Hummingbird Project) and Randy Manis (Margin Call, Run This Town). Filming is scheduled to continue into early September.
Executive producers are Jesse Williams, Jesse Chabot, Ricky Tollman, Matt Code and Jonathan Bronfman, as well as Palmiotti and Gray. Ariella Naymark serves as co-producer.
The film stars Williams (Grey’s Anatomy) Jordana Brewster (The Fast and The Furious franchise), and Niamh Wilson (Maps to The Stars).
Elevation first announced its intention to move into the production space in November 2016, launching a production arm in partnership with First Generation Films’ founder Christina Piovesan. At the time Noah Segal told Playback the company was looking to move closer to the content-creation process and hold ownership of more rights.
