Bron Studios is partnering with Munich, Germany-based prodco Tandem Productions on the period drama Shadow Play.
Created and penned by Swedish writer/director Måns Mårlind, the project tells the story of an American cop who arrives in Berlin in the summer of 1946 to help create a police force in the aftermath of the war.
German public broadcaster ZDF is also serving as a coproducer on the show, which is financed by a number of European broadcasters including Canal+ (France), Viaplay (Scandinavia), NPO (Netherlands) and Canal+ (Poland). Studiocanal TV is handling international distribution.
Casting on the series is currently underway, with filming set to begin in spring 2019. Mårlind, who is a co-creator of the hour-long crime thriller The Bridge (Sweden/Denmark/Germany), will pen all eight episodes of the series, while sharing directing responsibilities with Björn Stein (6 Souls).
Exec producers on the project include Studiocanal managing partner Rola Bauer, Tandem Productions EP Jonas Bauer, Mårlind and Bron’s Aaron L. Gilbert, Steven Thibault and David Davoli.
The announcement comes as Bron continues to make a push into the TV space after focusing on feature film between 2010 and 2017. In June of last year, Bron partnered with Michael Ellenberg (former EVP of programming at HBO), to launch a new production entity, Media Res. The new L.A.-based company is currently in development on an untitled TV series with Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon. In addition, Bron and Media Res are in development on a TV adaptation of David Cronenberg’s 1981 film Scanners, with the companies acquiring the rights to the sci-fi horror last year.
