Vikings maintains robust ratings in season five premiere

The international coproduction drew an overnight audience of 463,500 viewers (2+) as it returned on History.

Vikings is continuing to carry momentum and robust ratings as it moves into its fifth season.

The international copro produced by Toronto’s Take 5 Productions and Ireland’s World 2000 in association with Corus Entertainment posted overnight viewership of 463,500 (2+) during its season-five premiere on Nov. 29, according to Numeris data provided by Corus.

Airing in the Wednesday, 9 p.m. timeslot, the ratings haul made the series the most-watched specialty series in all key demos (A25 to 54, A18 to 34, A18 to 49). The premiere episode was followed by a one-hour original special, Vikings: The Saga of Lagertha, which was the second highest-rated specialty series of the night in the A25 to 54 and A18 to 49 demos.

While down from the fourth season premiere in March 2016 (where it drew in an overnight 2+ audience of 539,400), this year’s audience numbers are on par with last December, when the second half of its fourth season returned to overnight ratings of 465,000 (2+).

The drama has posted robust ratings across all of its seasons, with History renewing the series for a sixth season in September, more than two and a half months ahead of the fifth season debut.

The show is created by Michael Hirst, who serves as executive producer alongside Take 5′s John Weber, World 2000′s Morgan O’Sullivan, Sheila Hockin, Sherry Marsh, Alan Gasmer and James Flynn. Outside of Ireland and Canada, Vikings is distributed by MGM Television.
