* Paul Lewis replaces Ken Murphy as president and general manager of Discovery Channel. Previously Lewis acted as senior VP programming and was responsible for diginets Animal Planet, Discovery Civilization and CTV Travel. He has been with Discovery since 1994 when he joined the company as executive producer of in-house programming and helped create the science magazine show @discovery.ca. Before joining Discovery, Lewis was an executive producer of CBC TV News, and worked as a CBC journalist for 14 years.

* Pixcom Productions has named producer Nicola Merola head of international television. He was previously Pixcom’s director at Pixindo, the company’s operation in Jakarta, Indonesia, and then director of presales/distribution. Merola replaces producer Mary Armstrong who has left the company. Pixcom’s director of communications Nadine Dufour has accepted a similar post at pubcaster Tele-Quebec.

* Paul Sweeney has joined Highway Entertainment as executive VP programming. Sweeney has been working in the TV industry for 17 years, including acting as VP program sales for Fox Television Canada,

* Sayedali Rawji has been appointed director of technical services at the National Film Board, effective March 3. Rawji has been with the NFB for almost 30 years, most recently as assistant director-general, English programming.

* Bernard Houle has been appointed executive director of Quebec-based Giant Screen Consortium, a non-profit organization aimed at developing the IMAX film industry in Quebec and Canada.

Houle will be responsible for managing the GSC’s primary activities, including implementing a strategic plan, developing projects and establishing partnerships to promote and expand the GSC.

* Lisa Clarkson has been promoted from manager of production financing to her new position as deputy director of production financing at CBC Television Arts and Entertainment. Before joining CBC, Clarkson was a partner with law firm McCarthy Tetrault and currently sits on the board of directors of Women in Film and Television – Toronto.

* TV journalist Luc Grenier has left the TQS network to join competitor Reseau TVA as associate director of news. Grenier reports to Philippe Lapointe, VP news and public affairs.

* Susan Millican, CEO of Winnipeg’s National Screen Institute, and veteran civil servant Donald A. Obonsawin have joined the VisionTV board of directors. Millican previously worked as VP of programming at WTN and, after two decades at various posts with the federal and Ontario government, Obonsawin brings a strong background in policy development, culture and native issues.
