Xavier Dolan’s Juste la Fin du Monde (“It’s Only the End of the World”) has been named Canada’s foreign-language Oscar selection for the 2017 Academy Awards.
Telefilm Canada made the announcement Friday in Montreal at the Société des Arts Technologiques.
The film, which tells the story of a terminally ill man who returns home after a 12-year-long absence to announce he is dying, won the Grand Prix award at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival.
Juste la Fin du Monde, a Canada majority copro with France, is produced by Nancy Grant and Xavier Dolan of Sons of Manual, Nathanaël Karmitz (of French prodco MK2) and Sylvain Corbeil.
This is Dolan’s third feature to be chosen as Canada’s entry for Best Foreign Language Film at the Oscars. J’ai tué ma mère (I killed my mother) was selected in 2009 and Mommy was selected in 2014.
In Canada and Quebec, the film is distributed by eOne and Les Films Séville. It opened in Canada and France on Sept. 21.
